5 Dental Emergencies you Should Never Ignore

At Sunnyside Smiles, we hear it all the time:

"I thought it would go away.""It didn't hurt that bad at first.""I was hoping I could wait until next week."

Life gets busy, and we understand that nobody wants to spend their day dealing with a dental problem. But some dental emergencies have a way of getting worse when we least expect it.

Over the years, we've seen many patients from Fresno, Clovis, Sanger, and surrounding communities who wished they had called sooner. In many cases, a quick visit could have prevented days of pain, stress, and more extensive treatment.

Here are five dental emergencies we never recommend ignoring.

1. A Toothache That Won't Go Away

A toothache is your body's way of telling you something isn't right.

Sometimes the pain comes and goes. Sometimes it's only noticeable when you're eating or drinking. Other times, it keeps you awake at night.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that if the pain goes away, the problem is gone.

Unfortunately, that's not always true.

Sometimes a toothache stops because the nerve inside the tooth has become severely damaged. While the pain may disappear temporarily, the infection can continue spreading beneath the surface.

If you're experiencing tooth pain, it's always worth having it checked before it becomes something more serious.

2. Swelling in Your Face or Gums

Swelling is something we take very seriously.

A swollen gum, cheek, or jaw can be a sign of infection. Left untreated, dental infections can spread and become much more difficult to manage.

If you notice swelling, don't wait for it to get worse.

Give us a call so we can determine the best next step and help you find relief as quickly as possible.

3. A Broken or Cracked Tooth

Whether it happened while eating, playing sports, or simply biting into something unexpectedly hard, a broken tooth should never be ignored.

Even if it doesn't hurt right away, cracks can allow bacteria to enter the tooth and lead to infection later.

The sooner we evaluate the damage, the better the chance of protecting and preserving the tooth.

4. A Knocked-Out Tooth

This is one of the few true dental emergencies where every minute matters.

If a permanent tooth gets knocked out, there may still be an opportunity to save it.

Handle the tooth carefully, avoid touching the root, keep it moist, and contact a dentist immediately.

Quick action can make all the difference.

5. An Infection or Dental Abscess

An abscess is more than just a tooth problem—it can become a health problem.

Signs may include:

  • Severe pain

  • Swelling

  • Fever

  • A bad taste in the mouth

  • Pus drainage

  • Tenderness around the tooth

If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, don't try to "wait it out." Infections rarely improve on their own and often require professional treatment.

When Should You Call?

Our advice is simple:

If you're wondering whether it's serious enough to call, it's probably worth calling.

We would much rather answer your questions and help you determine what to do than have you spend days worrying or suffering through unnecessary pain.

Many dental emergencies are easier, faster, and less expensive to treat when caught early.
